Brackish water desalination equipment is a type of water treatment equipment primarily used to convert brackish water from highly saline or seawater-intrusion areas into fresh water that meets national drinking water standards. Its core processes include pretreatment, reverse osmosis desalination, and chemical conditioning. Its applications include drinking water, industrial production, power generation, and pharmaceuticals.
This equipment typically utilizes a multi-stage filtration system, including multi-media filtration, activated carbon adsorption, and reverse osmosis membrane modules. Pretreatment processes such as flocculation and sedimentation, and sodium hypochlorite sterilization, reduce contamination levels. The reverse osmosis system utilizes composite membrane technology, combined with scale inhibitors and pH adjustment to inhibit salt scaling. Some designs incorporate containerized structures for enhanced durability and portability. Innovative technologies also include ultrasonic atomization desalination, ion exchange resin regeneration, and remote control modules. Ultrasonic atomization technology achieves a treatment efficiency of 93.02% and also provides sterilization. The remote control system supports centralized management of multiple devices. The equipment can treat groundwater or high-salinity raw water with a TDS range of 2,000-20,000 mg/L.

For brackish water desalination, feedwater pretreatment is crucial for ensuring the long-term, stable operation of reverse osmosis systems. When developing a pretreatment plan, careful consideration should be given to the selection of materials for the equipment, valves, and piping used in the system, ensuring excellent corrosion resistance.
Due to the high hardness of brackish water, electrode scaling must be addressed. Designers can incorporate an antiscalant dosing system into the system design to effectively mitigate the impact of high raw water hardness on membrane life.
To prevent the formation of insoluble inorganic salts, such as CaCO3 and CaSO4, during the brackish water desalination process, which can form scale and precipitation on reverse osmosis membrane surfaces and system piping, antiscalants are added to seawater before it enters the reverse osmosis desalination system.
Adding H2SO4 to adjust the seawater pH and decompose HCO3 in the seawater to prevent CaCO3 precipitation is the most common and economical method in seawater desalination. Adding (NaPO5)6 (SHMP) is an effective method for preventing CaSO4 precipitation, but the byproduct phosphate produced by (NaPO3)6 during scale inhibition can promote the growth of microorganisms, bacteria, and algae, limiting its use. Specialized polymer scale inhibitors imported from Western countries are expensive and directly impact the operating costs of brackish water desalination projects. H2SO4 should be used as a scale inhibitor, and the pH of the reverse osmosis system feedwater should be controlled between 6.8 and 7.0. Furthermore, the water recovery rate of the brackish water desalination system should be controlled to prevent CaSO4 precipitation.
